Michael VandeHaar has been a professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University since 1988. He grew up on a dairy farm in Iowa and completed a B.S. in biology at Dordt College (Sioux Center, IA) and Ph.D. in nutritional physiology at Iowa State University. His research in the past ten years has focused on: 1) development of genomic tools to enhance feed efficiency, and 2) nutrition of dairy calves and heifers. He has 300 published manuscripts, conference proceedings, and abstracts from his work, developed software for balancing dairy cow diets, and taught nutrition to 4000 students. In 2013, he was awarded the ADSA American Feed Industry Association Award. He currently serves on the National Research Council committee to revise the nutrient requirements for dairy cattle and on the Board of Directors for ADSA.
